چکیده

191 January 2015 B LOOD transfusion is the most frequent procedure performed during hospital admissions1 and many transfusions are administered in the perioperative period, often on a time-sensitive basis. In this clinical commentary, key points related to pretransfusion testing are reviewed with an emphasis on the electronic crossmatch, as well as the use of uncrossmatched erythrocytes in situations where crossmatch-compatible units are not yet available for transfusion.

Comparison of 0.8% vs 3.0% Screening Cells for Antibody Detection and Identification

Antibody detection and identification in routine hospital transfusion laboratories requires methods that are both rapid and sensitive. The NPAAC Requirements for Transfusion Laboratory Practice (2008) stipulate that the screening cells used to detect unexpected red cell antibodies in pretransfusion testing must express the following antigens: C, c, D, E, e, M, N, S, s, K, k, Fy(a), Fy(b), Jk(a)...

Integrating molecular technologies for red blood cell typing and compatibility testing into blood centers and transfusion services.

Nucleic acid-based technology is now at a point where the field of transfusion medicine is ready for its widespread application. In the donor center, genotyping of red blood cell (RBC) products provides phenotype-matched products for special patient populations or antigen-negative products for patients with alloantibodies. In the immunohematology reference laboratory, molecular technologies aid...

Identification of First Patient with Rh null Phenotype in Southeast Iran

Background and Aims: Rhnull, with an estimated incidence of one per 6,000,000 individuals, is an extremely rare disorder with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance that is more common in societies with a high rate of consanguinity. Materials and Methods: In this study, we report the first case with Rhnull, a blood group phenotype in southeast Iran, which was diagnosed during pretransf...

Red cell immunology and compatibility testing

Introduction Immunohematology is the study of the immune response to blood cells. This chapter reviews the basic concepts of immunity as they apply to production of antibodies to red blood cells (RBCs), also called atypical alloantibodies. Antibodies to platelets and neutrophils, as well as autoantibodies and drug-induced antibodies, are discussed elsewhere. The relevance of immunohematology to...

SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose of the guidelines The effective development and maintenance of satisfactory standards in pretransfusion testing requires a structured approach in the adoption of a quality system. Technical errors, clerical errors, the use of nonvalidated techniques or equipment and noncompliance with established procedures may result in missed incompatibilities and immediate ...
